The Effect of Alternating Current for Patient with Osteo-arthritis and Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Abstract
Objective: To assess the efficacy of alternating current for patient with osteo-arthritis and myofascial pain syndrome.
Method: Thirty patients with osteoarthritis on the knee and twenty-eight patients with myofascial pain syndrome on the upper trapezius muscle were treated by alternating current. The visual analogue scale and pain threshold were checked at pretreatment, 1 week posttreatment, 2 week posttreatment, 3 weeks posttreatment, and finally 4 weeks posttreatment. The visual analogue scale and pain threshold of the treated patients were compared to that of the control group.
Results: The results were as follows: 1) The visual analogue scale of patients with osteoarthritis at pretreatment, 1 week posttreatment, 2 week posttreatment, 3 weeks posttreatment, and 4 weeks posttreatment were 4.31, 3.30, 2.48, and 1.67, respectively (P<0.01). 2) The pain threshold of patients with myofascial pain syndrome at pretreatment, 1 week posttreatment, 2 week posttreatment, 3 weeks posttreatment, and 4 weeks posttreatment were 3.41 kg/§², 4.29 kg/§², 4.59 kg/§² and 5.16 kg/§², respectively (P<0.01).
Conclusion: In our study, alternating current for patient with osteoarthritis and myofascial pain syndrome offered significant efficacy and appeared to be a reasonable therapeutic option.
